I got a late start in this business we call acting. It was not what I started out to be. I went to Law School, became a lawyer if you can believe that or not. I got approached in a London coffee shop by actor, and now friend, Steven Berkoff (who I later starred in Attila with) gave me a role in the play "Coriolanus" and I gave up law school. While filming "Mrs Brown" in Scotland in 1997, I was enjoying a picnic near the River Tay with my mother, when we heard the shouts of a young boy who had been swimming with a friend and was in some trouble. I jumped in and saved that young lad from drowning and received a "Certificate of Bravery" from the Royal Humane Society. I am still humbled by that...it was not necessary as I was just doing what anyone in the situation would have.
I won't bore you with the details of all my films as that is easily searchable through the internet. I've had some small parts and some roles that you may have heard of such as Spartan King Leonides in the tiny, unheard of film "300". I also had a wee-bit part in the film "P.S. I Love You" with Hilary Swank, Lisa Kudrow, Gina Gershon and
some guy named Jeffrey Dean Morgan who felt he needed to out shine me by baring his arse in the film. At least we had beautiful women as our cast mates. I do have to say the ladies are definitely a perk to this job. I've had some lovely ones to work with. Besides the three I mentioned already, there has also been Maria Bello, Angelina Jolie and
Katherine Heigl. I've been in a Dracula movie; Phantom of the Opera, Tomb Raider and James Bond and have no less than 5 movies currently in pre or post production. "Nims Island" and "RocknRolla" were my 2008 releases. I've got "The Ugly Truth" coming out and have finished "Game" which is a Sci-Fi Thriller, and I am currently in Philadelphia filming "Law Abiding Citizen" in Philadelphia with Jamie Foxx.
Music is my second love. Yes that was me singing in "Phantom" and I was at one time the lead singer for a Scottish rock band named Speed.
When I am not filming, I divide my time between London, Los Angeles and New York, but whenever I can get the chance I am heading back to my beloved Scotland.
Hold up, this sounds a bit like a personals ad and I don't intend it to be, especially since I am not single. In fact, I am seeing the lovely Katie Heigl who is pregnant with my son. I imagine she will say more about that. Gerry Butler settling down...just doesn't seem likely to anyone who knows me, but its true. And I love my life. We spent Christmas in Scotland and New Years together in Miami and will be heading back to Scotland for the babies birth.
AIM is Butlers Bum but I am not sure if I like it. I'm a friendly chap and I promise not to bite too hard, but remember, I did play Dracula, so you have to take your chances!
